The ‘Remarkable Garden’ label (Jardin remarquable) has been developed under the auspices of the Conseil national des Parcs et Jardins (National Parks and Gardens Committee) .
Its purpose is to indicate to the publicgardens in which design, plants and maintenance all achieve a remarkably high standard, whether such gardens be private or public, and regardless of whether they enjoy protected status as national sites or monuments.
Gardens are nominated for this national label for a period of 5 years by regional committees established under the aegis of the Regional Cultural Affairs Authorities (D.R.A.C.).
At the present time three gardens in the Tarn have been awarded the ’Remarkable Gardens’ (Jardins Remarquables) label:
The Paradise Gardens in Cordes-sur-Ciel,
The Martels Gardens in Giroussens,
The Gardens of the Bishop’s Palace in Castres.
A whole series of little enclosed gardens, each one in a different style. As you pass from one garden to another the perfumes and colours change and transport you to different worlds. The garden also contains a perfume trail, to challenge your senses.
Jardin des Paradis
In 9 acres of gardens there are more than 2500 varieties of plants from all the 5 continents to discover. In addition you can enjoy many ponds and lakes covered with lilies and there’s an exotic conservatory too.
Jardin des Martels
Formal gardens designed by André le Nôtre, formed of six flowerbeds. The two main ones represent a fleur de Lys made up of coils, palm shapes and arabesques.
Remarkable Garden Award 2004. The garden also appears on the additional list of National Historical Monuments.
In addition to a superb rose garden, this park, laid out beside the Tarn, contains a château built in the 17th century on the plan of an Italian-style villa.
