NOTRE-DAME-DE-LA-PAIX CHURCH

Church dating from 1862 with its Lauragais-style bell tower. The church boasts a magnificent 18th-century organ, formerly the organ of the abbey. Père Lacordaire also helped to finance the building.

This church was built in the 1860s to remedy a precarious situation for the parishioners and for the Abbey School. Since the destruction of Saint-Martin church during the Wars of Religion (only the bell tower remains). There had been no church for the population of Sorèze apart from the abbey church. The situation was resolved under the direction of Father Lacordaire between 1854 and 1861. This demanding man did not appreciate the presence of the villagers in his school. So he offered to pay a colossal sum of 22,000 francs (a very large sum at the time, including part of his personal fortune), materials and a piece of the 6-hectare school grounds. The work was carried out quickly, and the building was completed in 6 years. It was around this time that the vault of the abbey church collapsed! The great organs ( Historical Monument) were moved to the new church, as was Père Lacordaire's vault, much later, in 1992. The construction of the new church led to the destruction of the village wash-house, which was rebuilt on the other side of Sorèze (near the car park) in the 1930s. As well as the organ and Father Lacordaire's vault, you can enjoy a magnificent painting by one of Toulouse greatest 17th-century painters: Rivalz.
