Standing 2.66 m high, the Cantoul statue-menhir is intriguing for its slender shape and rare engravings: face, staff-axe, dagger... A prehistoric witness full of mystery.
On the heights of Barre, at the northern entrance to the hamlet of Cantoul, the Cantoul statue-menhir offers visitors a singular silhouette, both slender and mysterious. Carved from a block of granitic gneiss, this 2.66 m high monument has an elongated, almost oval appearance, softened by erosion.
Its front face, which is relatively flat, reveals a stylized face, a rare and finely engraved staff-axe (41 cm long), a pendant-dagger, joined legs, and, partially, a belt. These attributes confirm the statue's belonging to the Saint-Pons style, a megalithic current characteristic of Haut-Languedoc.
Discovered in 1987 on the western slopes of Combeynart, this prehistoric figure is now visually accessible from the public space and fits perfectly into a heritage tour focused on the statue-menhirs of the territory.
