East of Lacaune, the Pierre Plantée statue-menhir dominates from its 4.50 m height. Classified as a Historic Monument, it is one of the most imposing in Europe and a must-see in the Haut-Languedoc.
Erected east of Lacaune, in a convivial meadow equipped with a car park and a picnic area, the Pierre Plantée statue-menhir impresses with its extraordinary size: 3.40 m above ground (4.50 m with its base), which makes it one of the largest statue-menhirs in Europe.
Carved from local granite, this male figure dates back several millennia and is part of the megalithic tradition of the Saint-Pons group. Formerly richly adorned, it still retains emblematic traces: a belt, disjointed legs, and other details that are discernible despite erosion. To better distinguish the attributes, the secret is to stand on the other side of the monolith, with your back to the Pic du Montalet.
Classified as a Historic Monument since 1883, this stone giant intrigues and fascinates visitors. It embodies both the power and the mystery of the Neolithic builders, offering a unique plunge into the prehistory of Haut-Languedoc.
