In Saint-Salvi-de-Carcavès, the Ouvradous (1) statue-menhir, a male figure sculpted several millennia ago, still reveals its fascinating details.
Discovered around 1929-1930 near the Ouvradous farm, in the commune of Saint-Salvi-de-Carcavès, this statue-menhir made of pink Permian sandstone dominates the Dadou valley. Reused for decades as a threshold stone for a sheepfold, it was noticed by enthusiasts and then authenticated in 1977 by Jean Lautier.
Standing 94 cm high, it represents a male figure whose details, despite wear, remain clearly visible: a rounded face with a sculpted right eye and nose, a necklace, a saltire baldric descending on the chest, engraved arms, and a belt. The back, remarkably well preserved, features shoulder blade hooks and a baldric ending in a double strap. Traces also suggest the presence of an object held in the right hand.
A precious testament to Languedoc megalithism, the Ouvradous I statue-menhir plunges you into the heart of the Neolithic, to meet the first agricultural communities of Haut-Languedoc, between mystery and a millennial heritage.
