Statue-menhir du col de la Frajure

In Nages, the statue-menhir of the Col de la Frajure lies directly on the ground... A prehistoric stone giant, discreet but fascinating, to be discovered on a forest walk.

In the shade of the large trees on the Col de la Frajure, a prehistoric treasure almost melted into the landscape rests: the statue-menhir of the Col de la Frajure. Lying on the ground, it impresses with its dimensions (nearly 3 m long, 1.42 m wide and 0.52 m thick) and captivates with the finesse of its engravings. A stylized face, arms, legs, a baldric, and a scabbard can still be distinguished, all typical symbols of megalithic art.

Discovered in 2007 on the embankment of an old forest path, this figure was installed nearby on an easily accessible esplanade. It testifies to the human presence in the Haut-Languedoc since Prehistory and fascinates with the quality of its execution. Classified as a Historic Monument since 2015, it reveals its most subtle details when the raking light brushes its surface.

In this peaceful forest setting, this original stop will appeal to hikers looking for an unusual break as well as to curious families or megalith enthusiasts.
