Come on this UNESCO World Heritage site and enjoy to stroll, visit or bathe in this verdant environment.
Nested on the Laudot valley, the St. Ferreol Lake is a water reserve for the Canal du Midi. It helps to compensate the irregular needs of water and the rainfall variability. The site is surronded by the first forested peaks of the Black Mountain.
Five years (1667-1672) have been necessary to build this "magasin d'eau" which became the biggest water reserve in Europe with its 3.5 million cubic meters of water. The structure of this dam is a wall hold by upstream and downstream embankments. Then, the water volume of the reservoir has been doubled by the action of the french engineer Vauban. Many curious from all over the world came here to see this extraordinary construction, as the former US Ambassador Thomas Jefferson in 1789.
Two supplementaries valves are opened in the mid-19th century on order to enhance this touristic site. The Badorque valves have been designed in the Romantic Period in order to create a waterfall and the famous St. Ferreol Spray in a bautiful garden "à l'anglaise".
The first plantations let to stabilize the reservoir's structure. A pine forest is lanscaped all around the lake : smell the air and enjoy the refreshing scent thanks to these pines next to the lake. You are warmly invited to enjoy this wonderful place by relaxing, picnicking or simply doing absolutely nothing ! Supervised swimming on July and August.
The ideal place for some happy moments with your family or your friends.
