Old Wood Workshop

The Bois-Vieil Sculpture Studio is the home of sculptor Josée Catalo. The park is open from 3:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. There, you can view sculptures, drawings, paintings, and whatever else inspires her at the moment.

Born in July 1951 in Réalmont, Josée CATALO began drawing as a child whenever she had a spare moment. She worked successively as a fashion stylist, designer, and exhibition booth designer and installer... she explored all the possibilities opened up by her keen perception of line and the volumes created by its movement. Josée thus naturally turned to sculpture, which she creates using either stone or reinforced concrete for monumental outdoor sculptures, or mixed media—though always mineral-based materials. Between 1976 and 1980, she developed a technique involving a metal framework covered with stucco mixtures, enabling her to create large-scale sculptures. She then applied this technique—which she intended to be simple and effective—in her work as a trainer of therapists in sculpture-based mediation and as a facilitator working with people with intellectual disabilities. A happy jack-of-all-trades, Josée Catalo has participated in numerous projects where her creativity has been able to take unconventional paths:
Since 1995, architectural and decorative redesign, artistic styling, and the creation and management of an exhibition space at the restaurant “Le Tournesol” in Sorèze. In 1992–94, she designed and created a three-dimensional sensory alphabet for therapeutic use with autistic children, in collaboration with Dr. Régine Hurstel, a neurologist. In 2003–2004, she created the scenography for the “Plein champ” exhibition by tapestry artist Dom Robert at the Orangerie of the Palais du Luxembourg in Paris. Since then, drawing on these experiences, she has shared her method with many people during the workshops she organizes at her home, the “Ateliers du Bois-Vieil” in Verdalle.
