According to the legend, the Devil, carrying a large sack of coins, crossed the Monts de Lacaune. Coming from Spain, he was going to buy the souls of some Auvergnats.
Passing over the heights of Lacaune, he hung his bag on a stump. All the coins scattered on the ground. Furious, he kicked a rock, leaving his mark on what is now called “Roc des Écus”.
Mad with rage, he returned to Hell. But the golden coins remained there, scattered around the rock…
