Statue-menhir de Rieuviel (1)

Erected near the hamlet of Rieuviel, this finely engraved statue-menhir reveals a face, a bow, a belt, and a pendant-dagger: a masterpiece of Neolithic art from the Haut-Languedoc.

Discovered in 1896 near the hamlet of Rieuviel, in Lacaune, the Rieuviel statue-menhir (1) is a remarkable testament to late Neolithic megalithic art in the Haut-Languedoc Regional Natural Park. Carved from a block of fine-grained granite, it measures 2.10 m high and 1.08 m wide. Its quadrangular silhouette, with a slightly rounded top, features rich ornamentation whose details are still visible in raking light.

From bottom to top, we can distinguish: a face in relief (eyes, nose) framed by an arch or a harness, a baldric, a bow engraved under the left arm, a pendant-dagger, a belt with a plate buckle, and joined legs adorned with clothing folds. This composition testifies to exceptional craftsmanship and a symbolic vocabulary shared in Saint-Pons statuary.

Today, preserved near its discovery site, this fascinating figure attracts both history enthusiasts and curious hikers. By observing its engravings, one travels through more than 5,000 years of history, following the footsteps of the prehistoric communities that populated the Haut-Languedoc mountains.
