On the castle mound, nestled in beautiful greenery, stand the ruins of the keep and chapel of the ancient fortified castle built around 1240 by Sicard Alaman, a lord from Albi. It’s an ideal spot to enjoy a leisurely stroll.
The castle is listed as a historic monument and is one of the must-see sites in the town of Saint-Sulpice-La-Pointe.
Perched on the ancient castle mound, the ruins of the chapel at the Château du Castela—founded by the Albi nobleman Sicard d’Alaman in 1240—bear witness to Saint-Sulpice’s rich historical past and strategic position during the Middle Ages. The castle was destroyed during the Wars of Religion in the 16th century by Protestants. In the wake of this tragedy, prominent figures from Toulouse decided to rebuild all the houses in the bastide using bricks from the castle. This is why only a few remnants of the ancient fortress remain today.
Today, the Castela site offers a beautiful, lush setting where families can enjoy a picnic or simply take an impromptu nap lulled by birdsong… Newlyweds come here one after another for souvenir photos, and tourists admire the superb view of the Agout River…
