The Village of Lautrec

Lautrec is listed among the "Most Beautiful Villages of France"; these villages share the same passion and ambition: to promote and highlight the exceptional quality of their heritage and invite you to discover their history.

The medieval town of Lautrec is located in the heart of the Tarn department. Perched atop its rocky outcrop, the Calvaire de la Salette offers a superb view of the Agoût Valley, the Montagne Noire, and the Pyrenees.

Founded in 940, the town of Lautrec developed at the foot of a rocky spur, which provided it with an ideal defensive location. Lautrec gained fame thanks to the great families of viscounts, from whom the ancestors of the famous painter Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec descended. Like a living history book open to all who look, the ancient stones will tell you—as you wander through the narrow streets lined with remarkable monuments—the glorious history of this medieval town in the Pays de Cocagne. Lautrec welcomes you to the authentic setting of one of the “Most Beautiful Villages of France.” This rural area also owes its fame to the certified production of Lautrec Pink Garlic, which has earned it the distinction of being one of the “Remarkable Sites of Taste.” The Pays de Cocagne owes its name to the cultivation of woad, a dye plant that brought wealth to the region from the 14th to the 16th centuries. Lautrec was notably a hub for the trade of woad bales at “La Pastellerie,” at the foot of the windmill.
